Enrollment Currently Closed

The Academy is offering this voluntary skill-building program to all County employees as a tool to aid in developing effective communication through writing. The program is held on the campus of Los Angeles City College and is currently comprised of three core courses: Business Vocabulary, Business English, and Business Communication. Courses in this program have been customized for the County and will incorporate assignments that are relevant to the workplace.

These are regular college courses and you will earn college credit when you successfully complete each course. The course length is 16 weeks, and classes meet one day per week in the late afternoon for three hours. In addition to the class time, you will be assigned reading and homework assignments to be completed on your personal time.

This program is intended to be a shared commitment, partially on County time and partially your personal time; however, management approval will be required to attend the program.

The Academy pays for your enrollment, books, materials, and campus parking. This program is open to all County employees who want to develop their writing skills and are able to commit the time and energy to these college-level courses.

Descriptions of the courses are as follows:

  • Business Vocabulary - This course emphasizes improvement in spelling proficiency through the study of basic rules, as well as exercises on irregularly spelled words. Course work will emphasize the correct definition, spelling, pronunciation, and use of vocabulary in business communications.
  • Business English - This course provides a review of grammar mechanics, writing effective business communications, a study of word usage, punctuation, sentence pattern and structure, and paragraphing.

You will be randomly selected to attend the recommended courses. When you are selected for a session, we will send you a schedule of classes that must be approved by your management.
